🇬🇧 Sheffield Answers

Every week, I get tons of questions about growing houseplants. In “Sheffield Answers”, I’m going to pick one out each week and answer it. Want to submit your own and get it featured next week? Click here to ask me a question!

Question: "What do you recommend when you purchase online and receive a small plug. How long to let them sit before transplanting. Any info to help them survive would be great." Debi

My Answer: Plants sent through the post can suffer a bit depending on how far they’ve come. I wouldn’t rush to repot unless there is root rot or something. I’d give it a drink if the soil is dry and pop it somewhere bright but not sunny for a couple of weeks. If it looks like it’s happy, I’d repot into a pot that is a couple of sizes bigger and put it back where it was. Good luck!

🪴HOW TO & TIPS

As a Brit, I’ll be honest.

Halloween isn’t all that big here.

But a lot of viewers of the YouTube channel and readers of this newsletter are BIG on Halloween — particularly those of you from across the pond.

So naturally, this time of year, I regularly find myself looking around the flat thinking, “These green beauties could use a costume too.”

So in the spirit of October 31st, I’ve got three quick and easy ways to dress up your houseplants for Halloween (no crafting degree or hot glue burns required).

🎃 Re-pot into a "spooky pot"

Let’s start with the obvious (and my personal favourite).

Pop your plant into a Halloween-themed planter — black ceramic, pumpkin orange, skull-shaped, or even a cheap plastic cauldron from the pound shop.

It’s a simple change that instantly transforms your shelf into a mini haunted greenhouse.

If you don’t want to actually re-pot, slip your existing nursery pot inside the decorative one.

That way, you get all the seasonal spirit without disturbing the roots.

🎃 Add creepy accessories

Grab a few small Halloween props and tuck them into the soil or around the base of your plants.

Little skeleton hands poking through the leaves could work well. Or even better, fake spiders.

Just keep it safe — avoid covering the leaves themselves or blocking light to the soil, and remove decorations once the festivities are over (plants prefer Christmas to Halloween anyway).

🎃 Create a haunted silhouette

This one’s a little more atmospheric.

If you’ve got tall plants like Monstera or Fiddle Leaf Fig, place a soft orange light or candle-style lamp behind them at night. The leaves cast eerie shadows on the wall, turning your lounge into a gothic jungle.

Bonus points if you put on a spooky soundtrack while misting your plants. Nothing says “Halloween” like gently spraying your Calathea while Thriller plays in the background.

I couldn’t find a good example of this online, but if anyone reading manages to pull this off, send it through.

Did you know?

The word “monster” actually comes from the Latin monstrum, meaning “something extraordinary or unnatural” — which makes the Monstera the perfect plant mascot for Halloween.
