🇬🇧 Sheffield Answers

Every week, I get tons of questions about growing houseplants. In “Sheffield Answers”, I’m going to pick one out each week and answer it. Want to submit your own and get it featured next week? Click here to ask me a question!

Question: "Can bananas peels help your indoors plants?" Ivy

My Answer: Banana peels are often said to boost plant growth, but honestly, they’re not worth the hassle. They break down slowly, can attract pests, and don’t provide balanced nutrition. A proper liquid fertiliser will give your indoor plants everything they need without the mess or smell.

🪴HOW TO & TIPS

One of the most overlooked parts of houseplants is that they’re highly personal.

And when given as a gift it says, “I thought about you” in a way few things can.

(And unlike flowers, they won’t be wilted and forgotten by next week.)

Why plants make unforgettable gifts

Plants are little green reminders that someone cares. They brighten homes, boost mood, and — let’s be honest — make any room instantly more stylish.

A birthday plant feels alive. A housewarming plant turns a flat into a home. And when life’s been a bit rough, gifting someone a living thing to nurture gives them a small daily reason to smile.

Basically: plants make people feel better. Every time they water it, prune it, or even grumble about fungus gnats, they’ll think of you.

There’s a plant for everyone

You can find a plant that fits almost anyone’s personality:

  • For the busy friend: Snake Plant or ZZ Plant — low-effort, high reward.
  • For the small-space dweller: a hanging Pothos or Tradescantia Nanouk — lush, light, and space-saving.
  • For the sentimental soul: a Peace Lily or Calathea — symbols of calm, gratitude, and new beginnings.

There’s a perfect plant waiting to be gifted for every person, every space and every vibe.

The ultimate personal gift: your own propagation

Now, here’s where we level up.

Gifting a propagated plant that you’ve grown yourself is arguably the most heartfelt gift you can give.

It’s meaningful, deeply personal and don’t forget sustainable. Instead of just buying a plant off the shelf, you’re passing along something that literally grew under your care with no environmental impact.

The only catch is, of course, that propagation takes time.

Most cuttings need several weeks (sometimes months) to develop roots strong enough for gifting. So if you want to hand someone a beautiful, rooted cutting by Christmas or New Year, you need to start now.

That’s why I’m officially declaring November as propagation month!

Grab your scissors, pick a few healthy stems from your collection, and get them rooting in water or moss. Future you (and your lucky gift recipient) will thank you.

Want to master propagation before gift season?

If you’d love to learn how to multiply your collection properly — without the guesswork, check out The Plant Propagation Workshop.

It’s a straightforward and easy-to-follow workshop that shows you exactly how to take cuttings from popular houseplants, get them to root successfully, and grow them into thriving new plants you can gift (or keep for yourself).

Until the end of the week I’m giving everyone who’s on this newsletter (only 5% of my ENTIRE YouTube audience) 50% off the program.

It’s the perfect way to make this November’s “Propagation Month” your most rewarding yet. It also gives you plenty of time to go through the workshop and get propagating in time for Christmas/New Year’s.
